Rev. King on death row since January 11, 2007. |
The Lagos State Attorney
General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, gave this hint at the
2018 ministerial press briefing in Lagos, on the occasion of the third
anniversary of the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.
The Commissioner stated that
Rev. King, who was sentenced over 11 years ago, might get clemency and not go
through the hangman’s noose.
“The truth of the matter
is that the case of Rev. King, as high profile as it could be, is just one of
the other cases of people that are on death row.
“The case of the clergy
would be considered like others that had been convicted by the courts. The
death sentence would be carried out at any point in time, when the order is due
for enforcement. But, if he is worthy of clemency, it would be given to him.
But we haven’t reached that stage now. So he could continue to cool his heels
in prison,” Commissioner Kazeem disclosed.
It will be recalled that
Rev. King is currently on death row, having been sentenced to death by hanging after
the Supreme
Court of Nigeria on 26 February 2017, unanimously agreed to follow the original
verdict in 2006, which read, that he should be put to death by hanging.
On the 26
September 2006, he was arraigned before the Lagos High Court on a 6-count
charge of murder and attempted murder. He was arrested and charged to court
chiefly because of the murder of one of his members named Ann Uzoh, of
which he pledged 'not guilty'. She was said to have died as a result of the
so-called "Pastor" setting her ablaze, the reason eye witnesses
gave as pertaining this action was that he caught the victim in the act of
fornication.
In the course of the trial, a total of 10
witnesses came forward, swore with either a Bible or Koran and testified to the
fact that Reverend King was the perpetrator and that he was guilty.
During his trial at the Lagos
High Court Ikeja, one of the witnesses who came forward to testify was a man
named Edwin Akubue, who was later identified as a key and notable member of Rev.
King's Ministry. He made it open knowledge that the General Overseer of the
Christian Praying Assembly before his court cases or any allegation was
romantically involved with his wife and was fond of always molesting his church members, young and old.
Rev. King openly affirmed
the allegation of him molesting his church members.
“I am a preacher.
I know that the spirit of witchcraft is against the Almighty God. If somebody
is a liar, he is bewitching God. I don't condone lie. Dr. King does not condone
sin. I flog a lot. I have canes. If husband and wife mess up by having misunderstanding,
I have to settle them. But the person that is at fault, I must flog. If the
person refuses to be flogged, I will send him out of the church," he
boasted.
The Commissioner’s disclosure
appeared to have confirmed the boasts that some staunch members of Rev. King’s
church have continued to make, that it was impossible to kill him since he was
an anointed man of God; adding that God has warned that no one should do His
prophets any harm.
Rev. King was first
convicted and sentenced to death on charges of attempted murder by the High
Court of Lagos State on January 11, 2007.
