APC CONVENTION UPDATE: BUHARI DUMPS OYEGUN, THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND OSHIOMHOLE

Adams Oshiomhole and John Odigie-Oyegun.
Indications appeared late Tuesday night that President Muhammadu Buhari may have withdrawn his support for the re-election bid of the current APC Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as the party’s National Convention slated for May 14 draws closer.
This was part of the fallout at a crucial meeting the President held with no fewer than 15 governors elected on the platform of the party. A source privy to the deliberations at the meeting hinted that Buhari was able to impress it upon the governors why the candidature of Adams Oshiomhole, the ex Govenernor of Edo State, was very significant in the emerging dispensation, and therefore they should all rally support for him.

It will be recalled that Monday, at the zonal meeting held in Benin, the Edo State Capital, the South South zone had endorsed Oshiomhole as its preferred candidate for the top job.
Buhari’s latest stand, the source further revealed, may not be unconnected with the growing accusation particularly from the South West of Oyegun’s poor performance as Chairman and his seeming inability to hold the party together. In addition, the disagreement between Chief Oyegun and the leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also seen as part of the reasons.
“I am sure you’re aware that Asiwaju Tinubu has again become very relevant in the scheme of things in the party. So part of what he seeks is for the emergence of a Chairman that can easily rein in errant members. And he strongly believes Oshiomhole is that man. So it is not surprising that the President has decided to back Oshiohmole for the plum job,” the source said.
Incidentally, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Mr. Adams Oshiomhole both hail from Edo State, South-South, geo-political zone, where both also have been governors.
