Nigerian youths, hawking in the streets of major cities across Nigeria. |
Buhari had, while speaking
on Wednesday at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster, England,
told his audience that Nigerian youths, though educated, were lazy and always wanted
everything to be offered them on a silver platter.
“Nigeria has a very young
population, most of whom were uneducated but wanted everything offered them on
a silver platter, just because the country is an oil-producing nation,” the
President was quoted as saying, adding that “Nigerian youths like free things
based on the notion that Nigeria is an oil-rich nation.”

However, in swift reaction
to this, Senator has come out in stout defence of the Nigerian youths,
describing them instead as very hard working
“Whoever says Nigerian
youths are lazy should just buy a mirror and he or she will see the real
definition of laziness! I have over 1000 Nigerian youths in my employ and not
one of them is lazy,” the Senator stated.
In his own reaction, Reno
Omokri, ex President Goodluck Jonathan’s spokesperson wondered why the
President would make such a statement when, according to him, there are numerous
Nigerian youths hawking all day, even under hard weather condition.
“There are millions of
Nigerian youths hawking from morning to night under hot African sun, yet their
lazy President who hasn’t initiated, started and completed any project in three
years called them, lazy people who want to ‘sit and do nothing, and get
housing, healthcare’,” he said, quoting the President.
