A
presidential aspirant in the forthcoming presidential elections of 2019 in Nigeria, Prof.
Kingsley Moghalu has called on Nigerians to reject the current zoning formula
in the system.
In a
statement recently, he noted that the system was concocted by the traditional
Nigerian politicians, who could hardly think through concepts, but rather came up with
the idea of geographic zoning of the Presidency.
He debunked the claim that zoning would make the presidency
alternate between the north and the south, every eight years, adding that this was
a poorly thought out inclusivity framework.
“This
zoning doesn’t guarantee that the presidency will rotate to all the major
ethnicities of the country. This is a poorly thought out inclusivity framework.
“Geographic
zoning seems to mean automatic two terms of four years each for a president,”
he said.
He urged the electorate to reject any attempt to extend the tragic
failure of the last three years beyond May 2019.
“We
must also reject any candidate presented mainly on the basis of geographical
zoning. Suppose the next president is from the north, is zoning not going to rob
him of his constitutionally guaranteed right to seek reelection in 2023? Nigerians,
it is time. It is time for us to wise up.
“It is time to kick out the politicians who managed to come up
with a framework that is at variance with the constitution, and who have for
too long disregarded our collective aspirations in the pursuit for their
selfish interests. But if we must have zoning, it must be zoning to competence,”
Moghalu maintained.
